It is time again to equip your children for the upcoming school year. However, in case you are like most Americans, regardless of inflation, you are not making any more money than you did last year. So we offer just a little advice on how you can keep your children and their school happy, while staying on your budget.
Problem with back to school shopping
Back to school time is the second-largest shopping season of the year, and many stores are offering great bargains to lure you in. However, there is one issue.
President and Executive Director of Clarifi, Patricia Hasson, said:
"Wait for the list [of supplies required by the school]. It's easy to be tempted right now with all these great offers that they are advertising right now, except in a lot of cases you're not even sure what the school is going to require you to get."
You can certainly take advantage of the deals still, since they are really great deals.
Getting some electronic devices
David Bach, the author of "The Automatic Millionaire," told NBC recently that the average family will spend around $217 on back to school electronics this year. Fortunately, he says, August is "the best time of the year to get big discounts" on computers, iPads, notebook computers and the like. He advises to buy now.
According to Kristen Guilfoos of CBS, that is not really true. She suggests that the items will not get cheap until Black Friday and the end of Nov. Still, we accept Bach's advice since most students will need their electronic devices before November hits.
You can get things online and refurbished and pay a lot less for them too.
Back to school materials
Bach suggests:
"September is the best time to shop for everything else."
If you can wait any longer without giving your kid every little thing, you might want to wait just a little longer. According to Bach, the sales really start after school starts, so that is the best time to shop.
DealNews.com is the complete opposite of Bach though:
"There's really no incentive to hold off on purchasing school supplies. A lot of stores like Staples and Office Max, they're offering special promotions that just won't get any better after the school year starts."
Getting in bulk might be the best thing to do, and you might even be able to find things for affordable at the Dollar Store. Paper, pens and pencils are virtually the same no matter where you get it.
Finding clothes to make kids happy
A lot of people want to save money, but their kids want the latest fashions. That is when bargain buying should start.
Sakraida said:
"Typically September and October are the best times to buy jeans because they're trying to unload what didn't sell in the back to school sales."
Keep an errant eye on deals and discounts. She says brand names like can sometimes be found as inexpensively as $20, if you wait until school begins.
