Reality On Disabled Veteran Farm Loans

By Nancy Taylor

Agriculture which is the primary source of most of the food eaten in the entire America is mainly done in the rural parts of the country. It is so interesting also to note that about 44% of the military recruits come from the countryside. This is an indication that they are in one way or another associated with farming and that is how they are able to get these disabled veteran farm loans.

Being interested in peaceful environments after accomplishing their services, these farmers tend to prefer rural areas to urban areas. Here, most of them settle on farming. As a show of appreciation for their devotion, the government and the Farming Service Agency came up with a system that will help them in their farming through loans.

The farm loans that are offered by FSA are for different retired military persons. It is understood that a retired military that was never injured while on duty will be more efficient in farming while a disabled one will tend to be slightly less effective depending on the kind of disability they possess.

FSA had to ensure that the loans they offer are of help to the beneficiaries. This was to be achieved mainly through imposing strict regulations that have to be met before one qualifies for a loan. Also, these tough measures were kept in place to make sure that these new farmers were conversant with the new trends in farming.

One of these requirements is having a three-year experience. This was imposed to ensure that these physically challenged farmers can know the basics of farming. It is also important as it equips these new farmers with the current methods of farming that make one able to cope up with new farming methods. This is important mainly for the farmers who were doing farming before joining the military.

Moreover, another requirement by FSA is that a retired disabled military must have a minimum of 30 acres of land for them to be able to have access to this loan. The primary reason for this is to ensure that farming is not only done for subsistence but also for commercial purposes which tend to have more returns.

This new approach that was taken by FSA has been imperative and also of great help to our retired military personnel. Through this, they have been able to find other sources of livelihood especially to those who could not save enough during their working ages. It has also made them feel more appreciated for their services.

This move has not gone down well with other people who seem to have different opinions. To them, they feel that the taxpayers money that is being used for these loans is not utilized effectively. This group of people believe that the three-year experience will not be sufficient to enable a military who has been in war for the most part of their life to learn enough about farming.

Still there is the argument of these loans serving specific groups. For the retired military personnel who do not have sufficient energy to undertake farming due to old age, their chances of accessing these funds are minimal. Furthermore, nothing like this has been done to assist other retired military recruits who have other passions other than farming.
