Points You Must Bear In Mind When Filing Roofing Insurance Claim

By Steve Bruns

In the months when storms are abundant misfortune can tear apart your roof or it may simply misplace a few shingles. If you have the necessary coverage in the form of roofing insurance then you may just be able to claim it for repairs to damages. Therefore, what you must do is ensure that your coverage contains clauses pertaining to storm damage.

When people make ceiling policies they tend to overlook the finer details and end up paying for damages later on. While all policies will have something related to ceiling property damage, not all can give you the advantage of using it during a storm.

When you have just been hit by a storm and you suspect something wrong with the roof, it is in your best interest to call upon the expertise of a ceiling inspector. This inspection for damage may reveal a huge crack or it may not reveal anything but it is necessary to file for claims.

A common misinformation prevalent among homeowners is that if they file a claim for their policy early on then they are subject to the risk of having it cancelled or nullified. Well, this is true but if you have conducted an inspection and find repairs necessary then it is best to claim for repairs early on and save money rather than waiting for everyone else to do the same and find the rates going up. At least, by claiming early on you are paying premiums for your own repairs and not for others.

Insuring companies tend to add in particular clauses and situations to avoid having to pay out of their pocket for frauds and unwanted expenses. Hence, the first thing you must do is read through your own roof policy. Find out exact terms that suggest exclusions and find out what areas are covered for your house.

One area where insuring companies provide full protection is ceiling damage due to natural causes such as hail, rain, storm or wind. They can either offer full or partial aid but in no case will they cover damages if it is the result of neglect on the part of the house owner or if it has happened due to improper maintenance done by the contractor.

Before taking out a claim on your roof damage, make sure you have read through the clauses pertaining to materials used. Remember that not all materials get the same coverage. Wood shakes, tiles, stones and slates are usually not covered under any policy simply because they are expensive to maintain and repair. Even technologically advanced stuffs are not covered because they are either new in the market or they have not yet been tested. Most insurance companies offer coverage rates on a material basis.

The older a roof is the less likely that you can file for claim on your roofing insurance. This is because older roofs are more likely to get damaged in a storm or with time. Hence, when you purchase a new home make sure to take a look at the roof and check whether the materials used are all relatively new or if they have been double layered. Using two layers of shingles too makes your roof policy invalid since the lowest layer is treated as the actual age of the roof by insuring companies. Hence, the most cost effective method to file for roof claims is to first change out the roofing material and then take out a policy.
